Even after the lights go out, the worries within our hearts rarely fall asleep. The image of a pilgrim journeying toward the Celestial City in John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress invites us to consider where the hope that sustains a weary journey comes from. Pastor David Jang’s sermon on John 14:1–14 brings that question before Jesus’ farewell words. To disciples afraid of parting, the Lord offers an invitation to trust Him and the promise of His Father’s house, where they will be welcomed.

Faith Amid Anxiety: Holding Fast to the Love That Reaches Out First

At the moment of farewell, the first to offer comfort was Jesus Himself, even as He faced the cross. The disciples could not fully accept that the Teacher on whom they had depended was leaving. Afraid that their time of walking together was coming to an end, they could not see how they would face the life ahead. Even as His own suffering drew near, the Lord remained attentive to their trembling hearts.

To understand the words “Do not let your hearts be troubled,” we need to linger in this scene. These words carry the love of a Lord who cares for His frightened disciples to the very end. Confident that the Father was guiding His path, Jesus offered them peace. His appeal, “You believe in God; believe also in Me,” pointed them once again to the One on whom they could depend.

Paul, whom the sermon also brings to mind, likewise encouraged the church community beyond his prison walls. His exhortation to rejoice in Philippians 4:4 reveals someone offering comfort to others while enduring suffering himself. When we look only at our own circumstances, there may seem to be little strength left to give. Yet trust in God enables us to turn our attention toward others. In Jesus’ farewell words, we encounter this same love—a love that reaches beyond personal suffering to care for a neighbor.

Bringing today’s worries before these words begins with examining what our hearts rely on. The more heavily life’s crises weigh upon us, the more deeply we need the invitation Jesus extended to His disciples. The peace we receive by depending on Him gives us strength to reach out in prayer to someone struggling beside us. Even when we ourselves need care, we can help bear another person’s fears—and that realization broadens the reach of faith.

The Father’s House: A Hope That Looks Beyond Loss

In John 14:2–3, Jesus says that there are many rooms in His Father’s house. He promises to prepare a place for His disciples, come again, and welcome them so that they may be where He is. Before disciples whose hearts had been consumed by the news of His departure, a future together begins to unfold. Even within this conversation about parting, His love carries the promise of reunion.

At the heart of this hope is Jesus, who will welcome us. When death seems to sever every relationship and close off every possibility, the Lord speaks of a life shared with Him. The Father’s house is the place He Himself prepares and where He receives us. Faith can look beyond death because it trusts the Lord who has promised that future.

Pastor David Jang connects this hope of heaven with the loss and fear people experience today. For someone confronting physical frailty on a sickbed, or searching for a place of rest amid a crisis, the Father’s house offers profound comfort. Remembering where we ultimately belong changes the way we carry the weight of the present. The future of salvation opened through Jesus’ death and resurrection becomes a source of strength that sustains life now.

Hope in the Father’s house gives us the courage to persevere in the life entrusted to us today. This is also why the church proclaims this promise. To remind those wearied by immediate hardships of a future spent forever with the Lord is to offer them strength for the present. When today’s loss seems to encompass the whole of life, that promise draws our gaze beyond it.

Faith Writes the Lord’s Name on a Heart That Has Lost Its Way

Thomas asks how they can know the way when they do not know where the Lord is going. Jesus answers that He Himself is the way, the truth, and the life. In John 14:6, the way to the Father is Jesus Christ Himself; through Him, we come to the Father. To disciples who cannot see what lies ahead, the Lord makes clear whom they are to follow.

For Christians, meditating on Scripture becomes an opportunity to let these words question our lives. Where am I going, and whose words guide my daily choices? The sermon urges believers to keep encountering Jesus through the Word and prayer and to depend on Him as their living Savior. Confessing our faith in the Lord as the way must lead to seeking His guidance in everyday life.

This involves repentance and resolve. To confess Jesus as the way is also to examine the heart that has tried to determine its own direction by its own judgment alone. Repentance means turning our hearts toward Him; obedience is the response of a heart that has turned and now follows His Word. In this way, faith renews the direction of our lives, orienting both our judgments and our steps toward the Lord.

Jesus also says that whoever has seen Him has seen the Father. John 14:9–11 testifies that the Son is in the Father and the Father is in the Son, and that the Father’s work is revealed in what Jesus does. Through Jesus, the disciples come to know God, and through His works, they learn to trust the Father. Following Jesus as the way is thus inseparable from a life of knowing God more deeply.

These words also lead believers toward a life of abiding in Jesus. As the vine and branches in John 15 illustrate, our lives and the fruit we bear are rooted in union with the Lord. The church, too, must remain in this relationship, with Jesus as its head and its members united as one body in the Holy Spirit. This is why, whenever we serve one another and carry out the work entrusted to us, we need to consider where our strength comes from.

Hope-Filled Prayer Deepens as It Reaches Our Neighbors

In John 14:12, Jesus promises that those who believe in Him will do the works He does and will do even greater works. Pastor David Jang connects these words with the gospel ministry that would spread throughout the world through the disciples. After Jesus’ departure, they would proclaim the gospel to people across many more lands. The power given by the Holy Spirit would sustain them as they fulfilled this mission beyond their own limitations.

The words that soothed the disciples’ troubled hearts thus become a calling to reach the world. Those who have received comfort are entrusted with lives that offer comfort to others. A church that hopes in the Father’s house moves toward its frightened neighbors, proclaims the gospel, and gathers in prayer. Through this, faith deepens beyond concern for personal well-being into a commitment to walk with the Lord to the end.

The promise concerning prayer in John 14:13–14 has a clear purpose: that the Father may be glorified through the Son. Praying in Jesus’ name also calls us to examine what we desire in relation to His will. As we tell God what we hope to receive, we therefore also consider how those desires relate to a life that brings Him glory.

This confidence in prayer is connected to the way of salvation opened through Jesus’ death and resurrection. The sermon describes the freedom to ask God and hope for an answer in the Lord’s name as a spiritual privilege granted to believers. Remembering this grace makes prayer a time of trusting God and seeking His glory.

This same standard remains clear in missions, church planting, and relief work. Those who labor in the Lord’s name need to abide deeply in Him and seek His will. The sermon emphasizes that, within this union, prayer and dedication become instruments through which God’s glory is revealed. As we depend on the Lord and ask Him for strength and fruit in ministry, our labor, too, rests upon trust in Him.

In the light of these words, our prayers gradually deepen. The heart that brought its own problems before God begins to embrace the needs of others. The lips that asked to be upheld now call upon the Lord’s name for weary neighbors as well. Prayer and life come together as we share the comfort we have received from the Lord and remain faithful where He has placed us. The love that began in that moment of farewell reaches someone today through us.

As the night deepens, the worries within our hearts may rise again. At such moments, we need to remember the Lord who prepares a home in which to welcome us and asks us to trust Him. With the promise that has sustained me today held close to my heart, whom might I sit beside for a while, praying together through an anxious night?

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
